According to statistics from National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) less than 10 percent of the 1.5 million football playing seniors receive opportunities to play football on the collegiate level. Although, Georgia is well-known for grooming high school football talents, there are thousands of football playing seniors left without scholarship offers due to the lack of exposure and/or resources. To that end, Alonzo Upshur and Phil Thomas have created a platform to connect college football coaches to a pool of untapped talent.
For more than a decade, Phi Kappa Kappa Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated and the Project Friendship Foundation have afforded eligible high school senior football players the opportunity to receive scholarship consideration through a program called the Metro Atlanta Football Recruitment Summit. We held our 12th Annual Metro Atlanta Football Recruitment Summit at Charles Drew High School on February 9, 2019 where 70 high school seniors and 22 college coaches were in attendance. As recent as 2017 and 2018, the Football Recruitment Summit had over 275 senior football players in attendance.
Since the inception of the Metro Atlanta Recruitment Summit, more than 100 students have received academic or athletic scholarship opportunities amounting to over $1.5 million. Over 30 NCAA Division II, III, NAIA, Junior College and Prep School programs have participated in the summit and have been impressed with the quality talent that we present at our events. The Football Recruitment Summit consistently connects senior athletes with the opportunity to continue the pursuit of their football dreams while advancing their academic studies.
